Sheldon Country Park, Birmingham Apple Day

Friends of Sheldon Country Park, rangers and students from Solihull College joined us to get stuck in with typical autumn orchard care activities at the Sheldon Country Park community orchard to get ready for Apple Day celebrations on 26th October.

The Apple Day festivities on 26th October will include tours of the established and newly planted community orchards, pruning and mulching, opportunities to try your hand at juicing and a smoothie bike to make your own smoothie.

There will be games to guess the different apple varieties and a number of children’s activities such as apple caricature badge making as well as free food from the Real Junk Food Project.

If you’re lucky enough to have you have your own apple trees, you can bring along your own apples to juice. And we’ll have a go at guessing your apple variety, if you don’t already know it, we’ll need you to bring at least three apples for us to be in with a shot of correctly identifying!

19 year old Becky Willoughby, who is studying Animal Care at Solihull College, said:

“This is the first time I’ve volunteered. I enjoy it as I’ve learnt how to prune and mulch, I’m doing something physical outside and its sociable. I think other people should give it a go. You’re shown what to do so it’s easy and enjoyable.”

Rob Tilling from The Orchard Project and Helping Britain Blossom Birmingham project manager said:

“The great thing about community orchards is they belong to everyone. Anyone can come along to the Apple Day celebrations on 26th October, lend a helping hand and meet other locals in the process. Those wanting to get more involved can let us know and we’ll train them up. The Sheldon Country Park community orchard volunteers are a friendly supportive bunch so do join in. There will be lots of fun things going on for adults and children and some pruning and mulching for those wanting to give it a go. So come along, have fun and learn some new skills in the process.”
